The sorting office is quiet after midnight. You have the city directory, a map of three districts, the family registers and a table of renamed streets pinned to the wall. The letters are the hard part. A corner has been torn away with half a surname on it. A name was taken down over a bad telephone line. The street on the front has not existed by that name for years.

Every letter has one right recipient. The case generator checks that, checks that no single reference paper answers it alone, and checks that every clue it counts is printed somewhere you can read it. Turn the pages, cross names out in pencil, ring the bell if you need the supervisor, then press the stamp onto one line of the directory. Stamp a story or practice letter wrong and it lands with a real resident, who sends it back with a complaint slip while the sender tries again.

Thirty nights make up the story. A sender who signs only R. writes to places instead of people, and the last letter is addressed to the clerk. After that there is a daily case with a streak, and practice cases in three difficulty bands that do not run out.
